Here are five things to know about Chryst.
He's got a lot of experience
Chryst appeared in 23 games at Stanford and posted an 11-2 record as a starting quarterback – though much of the credit for that record should go to the Cardinal's defense and running backs Christian McCaffrey and Bryce Love.
Chryst lost his starting job to K.J. Costello, a rising sophomore, last November.
Chryst's career completion percentage is 55.4 percent. He's thrown for 1,926 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions.
He was a highly touted prospect
Chryst threw for 84 touchdowns in three years as a starter at Palo Alto High School in California. He was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 3 pro-style QB in the 2014 recruiting class by the 247Sports composite.
Southern California was one of the schools that recruited Chryst. Helton's brother, Clay Helton, was USC's offensive coordinator at the time. He's now USC's head coach.
He comes from an athletic family
Chryst's father, Geep, is the Denver Broncos' tight ends coach. He played college football and baseball at Princeton.
His uncle, Paul, is Wisconsin's coach, who played college football for the Badgers.
His uncle, Rick, is the former commissioner of the Mid-American Conference. He played college baseball at Notre Dame.
His grandfather, George, played college football at Wisconsin and coached Division III Wisconsin-Platteville.
And his mother, Shelley, played college volleyball at Wyoming and played one season on the Women's Professional Volleyball Association beach tour.
He tore his ACL as a sophomore
Chryst tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Stanford’s bowl game against North Carolina to conclude the 2016 season, but he recovered in time to start the 2017 season opener.
His best games were against Oregon
Too bad the Vols don't have the Ducks scheduled for 2018.
Chryst completed 19 of 26 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns to lift Stanford to a 52-27 victory over Oregon in 2016. Then last season, Chryst was 15 of 21 passing for 181 yards with three TDs and an interception in the Cardinal's 49-7 victory over the Ducks.
