The region could see between one to three inches of snow between 10 a.m. Tuesday and 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
That could make for slippery road conditions during the day and a difficult commute home on Tuesday night, prompting the NWS to issue a winter weather advisory.
Total snow accumulation is expected to be between one and three inches for portions of East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Southwest North Carolina.
Drivers should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility, and should use caution while traveling.
The NWS also issued a hazardous weather outlook for Monday, calling for the possibility of light snow resulting in some accumulation across the Cumberland Plateau by Tuesday morning.
A cold front is expected to move in Tuesday or Tuesday night bringing more widespread chances of snow throughout the region.
Local agencies were taking precautions Monday.
Crews pre-treated interstates and state routes across East Tennessee, Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesman Mark Nagi said in a tweet. TDOT crews will begin working at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nagi said.
